The HIDI Group worked with the Westside Recreation Centre construction manager to develop mechanical systems concepts that would meet the energy performance requirements of this project without exceeding capital budgets and ensuring that the systems provided were easily operated and maintained by existing staff.

The Phase 1 addition included a medium efficiency boiler plant for perimeter heating, variable speed pumping, demand control ventilation on the variable flow air handling units, and a heat recovery unit provided for the new change rooms. In conjunction with building envelope and lighting systems provided the estimated energy savings are 36%.

The Phase 2 addition will not be certified. However, the systems were selected for efficiency. They included a high efficiency condensing boiler plant with low operating temperatures, in conjunction with variable speed pumps and variable speed air handling for ventilation. The condensing boiler plant served the space, ventilation, and pool heating for the phase 2 addition.
