Working closely with HRI Group and Zeidler Architecture, The HIDI Group provided mechanical, electrical, and lighting design for the restoration and retrofit of the historic Allan Gardens Conservatory Palm House in downtown Toronto, Ontario.

Originally opened in 1910, the Palm House is the most iconic structure in the conservatory’s collection of historic greenhouses. Made iconic by its 16 sided glass dome comprised of 1200 unique glass panels, the Palm House serves as a beloved landmark in downtown Toronto.

Given the Structure’s heritage status, careful consideration was given to the preservation of the character and history of the iconic glass dome. A key component of this process involved the implementation of ventilation and air quality systems to the structure, providing much needed ventilation to the Palm House for the first time in its history. This was achieved through a specially designed greenhouse specific HVAC system, as well as a new controls system, which was carefully integrated with the existing heritage systems found throughout the remainder of the facility.

HIDI is proud to have been involved in the restoration of this historic structure, providing newly revitalized public space to Toronto’s downtown core for generations to come.
