At The HIDI Group, we have always placed importance on ownership and transparency – as a 100% employee owned company, we enable our team to play a vital part in the firm’s direction, decision-making, and sharing of our founding principles and values.
Joseph Brant Hospital, a state of the art hospital located in Burlington Ontario, aims to achieve and deliver the highest standard of infection prevention and control as well as the highest quality of patient care.
The HIDI Group provided mechanical and plumbing design and construction administration for the Joseph Brant Hospital renovation and expansion. The project required systems to service the existing building as well as the new seven-storey patient care tower which accommodates 172 new beds, a new emergency department, ten operating rooms, a post-anaesthetic care unit, new and expanded cancer clinic, expanded ambulatory care programs, renovated level 2B neo-natal Intensive care unit, expanded diagnostic imaging services, expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services, and a new main entrance.
Our team worked in conjunction with Infrastructure Ontario and Joseph Brant Hospital; on thisAlternative Finance Procurement model project with a consortium team which included EllisDon, Fengate Capital Management, Mulvey & Banani, Parkin Architects, and Adamson Architects Limited.
Challenges
Two of the challenges the team faced came during the new facility construction and renovation stage. The project had to be phased as to hinder disruption to the patients and staff since JBH is a fully occupied and operating hospital. The project required a phasing strategy and implementation plan to maintain the operation of the hospital with the minimal disruption.
The other challenge the renovation and new tower posed was the impact of the circulation patterns that were created by the new tower, tie-in and site reconfiguration.
