Medicine Hat Family Leisure Centre included the addition of a 50,000 ft² field house, a new gymnasium, a running track, weight lifting area, treadmill area, viewing areas and spectator seating in pool area, a new and expanded fitness and wellness facilities and upgrades to the administration to support the operation of the new areas.  The estimated value of construction is $25.6 million.

Our electrical scope included extending the electrical sub-service from the main electrical room to a new electrical room central to the centre. The feed was routed around the exterior of the building due to the main electrical rooms location was obstructed by the existing pool. New power was distributed for the field house, gymnasium, elevators and common areas.  The fieldhouse lighting consisted of duel level, high output fluorescent fixtures.  The duel level control allowed the user to increase the light levels for tournament like events. 

The network communications system was also extended to a central location within the project to support the heavy demands of the numerous networked and cabled treadmills and stationary bicycles.    The fire alarm system front end was relocated to support the changes to the main entrance.

Challenge

Extending power distribution to the new construction posed a bit of a challenge due to the existing pool that separated the main electrical room from the rest of the building. The solution was to route the large subfeed from the main room to the roof and route it over the roof structure to reach the secondary electrical room.
